Guerrilla Marketing for Houston Zoo Gorillas

In 2015, the Houston Zoo welcomed seven Western Lowland Gorillas to a new state-of-the-art habitat. The Zoo had not housed gorillas for 11 years, so it was an exciting and long-anticipated arrival. Along with traditional marketing methods, the Zoo wanted to do something special and outside-the-box to grab the city’s attention. Enlisting the help of Houston’s best street artists to do some “guerrilla marketing,” they peppered our “urban jungle” with five, unique, gorilla murals depicting the majestic creatures, and announcing the exhibit opening. This garnered the attention of many local (and some national) news stations, and helped usher in the largest attendance at a Houston Zoo exhibit opening, to date.
